Architecture & Rural Life in China

This workshop explores the lifeways of rural China through an in-person, experiential workshop at the China Folk House in West Virginia. The China Folk House is the result of a multi-year project to relocate an actual farmhouse from Yunnan Province in China to the Shenandoah Valley in the United States. The rebuilt farmhouse is faithful to the original in every respect, from architectural details and interior aesthetics down to its rustic location. Stepping into the China Folk House is like stepping into a typical home in rural China, but without the long plane ride and attendant jet lag.

The workshop is divided into three parts. In the morning session, participants will tour the property and learn about how the architecture of the folk house reflects the social life and culture of the Chinese countryside. The afternoon session will be devoted to exploring material culture through the making of the kind of folk crafts one might find among Chinese farmers. Between the two sessions, participants will be provided with a lunch of noodles prepared by the China Folk House staff.

  • The workshop is open to all K-12 teachers interested in learning more about rural China. Benefits include a Certificate of Completion, and Pennsylvania teachers will receive Act 48 hours.
