Join us for presentations by two high school educators who use articles from Education about Asia in their classrooms. Each presentation will be followed by Q&A with the presenter. Recordings of the presentations will be linked on the EAA website to the articles discussed in the presentations.
Stephanie Rizas, “Why Did Japan Succeed and China Fail? And Isn’t Modernization the Same Thing as Westernization?” by Brian Platt. Rizas’ presentation will focus on her use of this article in IB History of Asia as well as AP World History to help move students beyond “ China's response to imperialism was bad, Japanese response was good” to a more nuanced understanding of the Qing and Meiji periods.
Theodore Frank, “What We Forget When We Remember the Pacific War,” by Owen Griffiths. Frank’s presentation explores the themes "What do we do if history is WRONG?" or "What do we lose when we LEAVE OUT parts of history?"
Published by the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) since 1996, Education About Asia (EAA) is the premier peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the teaching of Asian Studies. Its mission is to equip educators with the resources necessary to introduce the study of Asia into their curricula.
