Why does Godzilla keep attacking Tokyo?

Join us for this in-person workshop led by Dr. Adam Manfredi (University of North Texas). This session explores how Japan's most iconic movie monster reflects the country's history, culture, and collective memory. Far more than a giant creature, Godzilla emerged in the aftermath of World War II as a powerful symbol of nuclear destruction, environmental anxieties, technological change, and national identity. Through film clips, historical context, and other materials participants will examine how Godzilla has evolved over seven decades and discover how popular culture can serve as a compelling entry point for teaching modern Japanese history and society.
