Join us for this Saturday workshop at the Japan House L.A. featuring the film and award-winning curriculum units for Edo Avant Garde, a film about the paintings of nature in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868). Documentary filmmaker Linda Hoaglund and master teacher Angie Stokes will take you into the world of Japanese painting during this period, presenting on the ways teachers can use art to teach about a variety of subjects, from nature to social-emotional learning to studio classes.
Registrants may arrive early for a special exclusive viewing of JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles’ current exhibition, POKÉMON X KOGEI | Playful Encounters of Pokémon and Japanese Craft, which brings together two of Japan’s most celebrated contributions to world culture – beloved characters from one of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises and craft that has evolved and been refined over centuries.
Workshop will include the choice of an in-person or online screening of the film ahead of the workshop, and a program at the Japan House LA, with Linda Hoaglund in person and Angie Stokes on Zoom, on Saturday, September 23. The Edo Avant Garde curriculum was awarded an Honorable Mention for the 2022 Franklin R. Buchanan Prize for curriculum development by the Association for Asian Studies. Presented by the Japan House, L.A. in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA) and the University of Southern California NCTA.
