Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Never Let Me Go”

Participants in this six-week course, led by Cecilia Boyce, will explore the works of Kazuo Ishiguro by engaging in weekly Canvas Discussions and six one-hour Saturday morning (10:00 am EST) camera-enabled Zoom sessions. The focus of the course will revolve around the Nobel Laureate’s literary accomplishments, how being culturally Japanese impacted his journey immigrating to England, and themes of navigating dual identities. Participants will also discuss war and memory through excerpts of Ishiguro’s work "A Pale View of Hills." Analysis of these works will venture into pedagogical territory from time to time.

  • Participants will need to procure a copy of Never Let Me Go prior to Sept 26 so that they can participate fully in the first Zoom meeting. Participants need not read the entire novel before the course commences, as we will approach the text in ~45-page increments. Excerpts from his other work, A Pale View of Hills, will be made available to you on canvas.
