Relaunch: Japan in the 1950s

When the Occupation ended in 1952, Japan turned away from a national and global identity as a defeated people and nation, embracing the return of its national sovereignty. International treaties ended the Occupation and launched new relationships with the US and the world. Domestically, Japan moved beyond recovery to economic, societal, and cultural transformations. Yet throughout the decade, Japanese society wrestled with legacies of its earlier 20th century.

This online course will explore the 1950s as a “bridge” decade, linking Japan’s early 20th-century past to its future through 4 thematic modules. Each module takes a key 1950s event, exploring the international and domestic stories unfolding from that event and features a live webinar with a leading scholar of postwar Japan.
