Teaching Japanese Incarceration using Multimodal Sources

Join Dr. Noreen Naseem Rodríguez (Michigan State University), a leading scholar on education about Asian American studies, to consider teaching and learning about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II and the legacies of this difficult history through multimodal sources. Teachers will explore immigrants entangled in US-Japan relations prior to 1941, rationales for incarceration, local and personal experiences of incarceration, Japanese American resistance, and legacies of incarceration. Core texts include Rachel Maddow’s podcast "Burn Order" and the picturebook "Unbreakable: A Japanese American Family in an American Incarceration Camp" by co-authors Minoru Tonai and Jolene Gutiérrez and illustrator Chris Sasaki.

  • The course will be conducted through 3 asynchronous, 2-week online modules, which include: multimodal materials including scholarly articles, the Rachel Maddow podcast, and a historical fiction picturebook; live webinars; and participant discussion forums on content and pedagogy. Attendance is required at 3 live webinars, Oct. 15, Oct. 29, and Nov. 12 at 7pm ET.
