Telling Stories from Dunhuang: Murals and Calligraphy in the K–12 Classroom
This webinar, taught by PhD student Huiru Chen, will introduce K–12 educators to the art and culture of Dunhuang, a place along the Silk Road known for its rich collection of murals and manuscripts. Using practical and accessible examples and methods Huiru will guide participants in exploring how Dunhuang materials can be used to develop students’ visual literacy, storytelling skills, and cultural awareness. Through the selected images, teachers will learn strategies to help students identify characters, actions, and settings and to construct stories based on visual evidence. Interactive exercises will model how murals can be used as prompts for storytelling, discussion, and creative writing in the classroom. Participants will also be guided on strategies for introducing Chinese calligraphy to students.
